Before the law, a lifetime of hard rooms

Before Ana came to law, she spent years inside environmental non-profits, in rooms where nobody agreed and everybody had something at stake. Federal bureaucrats. Local governments. Donors. Media. People who showed up to a community meeting because a decision was about to change their backyard. Her work was to read each of those rooms accurately and find the words that could be heard above the noise.

That skill did not get left behind at law school. Family law puts the same question in front of her on a smaller and far more personal scale: what does this person need, what does the other side need, and where is the agreement hiding.

What environmental work could not give her was the one-on-one part. Ana wanted to sit across from a single person on one of the hardest days of their life and be useful to them directly. She found Pathway Legal through our website, and what caught her was the idea that law can be practised with a spiritual centre to it, that a separation is a passage through something and not a transaction to be processed.

Ana is early in her career as a family law lawyer. She pairs with other lawyers in the firm on complex matters and works closely with the rest of the legal team.  

Ana studied law at the University of Victoria, graduating in 2025, and was called to the British Columbia bar in 2026. She speaks Croatian and French, and enough Spanish to be useful.

A few questions for Ana

You spent years in environmental advocacy before law. What carried over?

Negotiation, mostly. I sat with ministers and with people who had never spoken at a public meeting before, and I had to hear both of them properly. Family law asks for the same thing. Read the room, find out what someone is really worried about underneath what they are saying, and work from there.

Why family law?

Environmental work fed the activist side of me and I loved it. What it did not give me was the person across the table. I wanted my work to help someone directly, on a day when help matters.

What made you choose Pathway Legal?

The website, to the point of being obvious about it. There was a spirit to it that I had not seen at other firms, and a sense that the people here think about what a separation does to a human being, not only what it does to a balance sheet.

What do you want a client to feel when their matter is finished?

What are you like outside of work? Give us the real answer.

My husband Tom and I built our relationship in the sagebrush of the Similkameen and the alpine slopes of the Cascades. We hiked the remote corners of BC and camped in the backcountry, and we are both serious birdwatchers. For our wedding we got a pair of binoculars instead of wedding rings. I also cook constantly and I am currently making a mess of my new wok while I teach myself Chinese stir-fry. I grew up in Croatia and most of my family is still there, so I go back when I can, eat well, and wander around looking at old buildings and older art.
